For starters, a certified Genius from The Apple Store on Knox Street in Dallas recommended Data Rescue to me. As recovering lost data is not in my wheelhouse, I appreciated the suggestion. Fast forwarding a few days later, I can tell you his directing me to this company was a godsend. I downloaded Data Rescue 4, installed it - no glitches - and have already recovered the folder full of high resolution Photoshop files I'd given up as lost. My client from Columbus, Ohio had paid up front for the photo work and I'd lost it somehow on an LaCie 1TB external drive. If I never use the application again, it's paid for itself many times over. It's feature rich - quick cursory scans, deep scans, cloning, specific search for deleted files and on and on. I'm a believer.

But Wait! There's...!

At first I struggled with the learning curve but figured I'd paid for the software and was more than likely on my own. I thought there'd be little or no chance I'd get help but I gave their Tech Support a try. Wow! Cool guys...smart and with a sense of humor. I spoke twice with Gabe who had the patience of Job and was a genuine pleasure. He even said to call back if I had any trouble (which I actually did about 10 minutes after my first call.) Luckily I got Gabe again and he had me up and running in no time. I pronounced him a Wizard, congratulated Prosoft and haven't had to bug them again.

But I know they're there. And that's a very good thing.

So, yeah, you bet...I recommend Prosoft and Data Rescue 4 for Mac.

My daughter is a photographer, and right after editing some wedding photos her macbook pro crashed. Her next step would have been to back them up on an external drive and burn them to a disc, but due to the crash she couldn't do that. We took the laptop to an apple store but were told it would be 14 working days before they could even look at her laptop. We then took it to a local repair shop and they said they could recover the data in 5 days. After paying $125, we realized that none of the stuff she really needed, including the wedding photos were recovered. Through amazon, I purchased a new hard drive that my son installed to get her computer running again. Next, I purchased some hardware/cables to be able to connect the old, bare hard drive to my computer to see if it would mount, it did not. I then searched for recovery software online and found Stellar Phoenix. I decided to run a scan, mainly searching for photos, videos and audio. It took over 3 days, not good! Once done, it showed folders named "jpg", "tiff" "png" etc, which you can click on and get a small preview window to see the file, unless it was over 10 mb, which the wedding photos would have been. The next step was to "recover" the files. When I selected that option, it went to another window and asked for the registration key, which of course I did not have, so you were prompted to purchase the software for $99. After wasting 3 days scanning, I was expected to complete the purchase without knowing if it even recovered the files we were after, not good! So I googled recovery software for mac reviews and found that Data Rescue 4 was the highest rated option. I decided to try it and within 5 minutes, I was downloading the wedding photos! There was an option to search for the files by name, which I used to find the folder she had all the wedding photos in. Can you imagine my daughter's relief not having to tell her client that she lost all the wedding photos? Thanks to Data Rescue 4, mom was the hero of the day!

Sometimes you take things for granted, and you don't know how precious things are until you almost lost it. I was surprise when I found that majority of my folders in my external hard drive were empty. I don't know the reason why all of the sudden my folders becomes unreadable. They turned into "exec". Spent time with Apple care for over an hour to recover and fix it and they did their best to no avail. I researched and found Data Rescue, I read wonderful reviews for Data Rescue 3 and found out there's a newer version DR4. Took my chance because Me and my wife were bummed losing our children's pictures and videos from birth to date. Purchased Data Rescue 4 directly from their website as they give download option for the same price as Amazon. Installed it and ran the program for deep scan and recovery which lasted for 9.5 hours (1TB) overnight. After all is said and done it looks like this program has recovered 95% of files I have lost. My wife and I are very happy, there is nothing more precious than memories of images from the past. Thank you Prosoft Engineering!

Prosoft is one of the earliest companies offering Mac hard disk utilities. If their name is not familiar it might be that tech support geniuses do not brag about the software that makes them look smart. There are more choices today but Prosoft is the best I have used. It is the only software that was able to recover my files on a crashed 1TB hard drive. Data Rescue 4 has a simple interface that I found intuitive to use. Scanning large drives for erased or damaged files is complicated, but as a user, I only had to deal with a few choices. The options are carefully explained. It works. It does take time so be patient.

If you are looking for recovery software, you may already have a problem. Try to avoid adding a program or writing data to your problem drive. It can make things worse by writing over the very files you want to recover.


 Best product and tech support in 30 years of computing

This product and particularly the tech support staff were like a dream after a nightmare supplied by Apple. After taking my MacBook Pro, which would not boot, to the Apple Store, I was told it had a display card problem and needed to be sent to CA for repair. I asked if my data was safe since I had not backed up in the four years I had the computer. (I know, I know, but am I the only person who doesn't back up?) I was told that it was probably ok since my hard drive had been checked and had no problems, this by someone from the inaptly named Genius Bar. Without a text or email or any communication, the processor was replaced, the operating system reloaded and the hard drive reformatted. When it was returned I was told that my data was gone. I called several data recovery operations and was told various things - impossible, maybe 50-50 but it will cost $300 to find out then more by the hour for the work. I call the Data Rescue people, and found out for free that recovery was possible. Then for $99 the recovery was done. But the most impressive part of the story was the patient, careful, helpful tech support I got. I called several times and spoke to several people and always got the most courteous and helpful support I have received in almost 30 years of working with a computer. Great product and great people!

Loved it! I lost half my iPhoto library and it recovered ALL the photos. The user interface is pretty user friendly provided you have a reasonably good knowledge of computers. Once your hard drive is scanned it will categorize the data, i.e. images, documents, movies, etc. Only down side, at least when I ran it on my 500gb Macbook hard drive, was it took well over five hours to scan. The actual recovery of the chosen data was quite fast, however. It is recommended that all recovered files be saved on an external drive then imported onto your computer's hard drive. So make sure you have a large enough external drive handy.

Not only is the performance of this software amazing, so is the customer support. I called the company about four times and got three different support staff members. Each one was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and PATIENT. It felt like I could stay on the phone asking questions for hours if I needed to. CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS THE BEST I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED!

$99.00 is a bit high, but it recovered many priceless family photos. So for me 99 bucks turned out to be a steal!

This is one of those rare pieces of software that actually does what it professes to do. I have had several situations (testimony to my own inept file keeping) in which I have inadvertently erased (and formatted) a digital recorder then later realized that interviews I needed to transcribe had not been downloaded yet. Ordinarily a nightmare situation; with Data Rescue, a mere inconvenience. I've had similar results with seemingly "lost" photos on a compact flash card. Until I get better about not formatting a card before grabbing the data I need, I am eternally grateful the folks at Prosoft Engineering have their act together. I can't recommend Data Rescue highly enough.

Like many I only purchased this when I had a criss. As my last version was for a Mac Powerbook I was at a loss as to how to accomplish my recovery using DR4 but in the end it did what it said on the label. As a previous owner I knew Data Rescue was good and I'm glad to say DR4 is no different. The important thing for me was the outstanding Tech support, prompt, spot on and patient. Thank you Mathew W you saved the day for me. I highly recommend this product & its support.
