Today I worked with a customer who was trying to recover data from their iMac’s hard drive. He was no longer able to startup his computer from his Macintosh HD volume on this drive but he was able to start in Mountain Lion Recovery Mode. He was wondering if there was anyway to use Data Rescue 3 in this case. He didn’t have access to another Mac so the best option for him was to install Mac OS X to an external drive using Recovery Mode, I guided him to start this process.
Once he had Mac OS X installed he was able to start his computer using this external drive and then installed Data Rescue 3. He ran a Deep Scan on the internal hard drive of his iMac and when it finished he recovered all of the data to his external drive. He began to go through the recovered data and was happy to find all of his important files.
