FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Novell Brings NetWare 5 File and Print Services to Macintosh
- Macintosh users to benefit from Novells file and print services
in a pure IP environment.
- Prosoft Engineering to continue to sell and to support Macintosh
clients for NetWare.
PROVO, Utah March 1, 2000 Novell, Inc. today
announced plans to deliver NetWare 5 file and print services for the Macintosh later this
year. NetWare 5 file and print services for Macintosh will further Novells
continuing effort to provide companies with Net services software that supports cross
platform environments. Net services software provides universal services to secure and
power all types of networks¾ wired to wireless, corporate and public, the Internet,
intranets, and extranets¾ across all leading operating systems.
NetWare 5 services for Macintosh will provide users with the same
reliable file and print services that PC users currently have. Many organizations have
been anticipating these services from Novell before upgrading their heterogeneous PC and
Macintosh environments to NetWare 5. Novell will provide these services for Macintosh
users during the calendar year 2000.
"Our goal is to provide cutting edge technology for our
students and teachers," said Alan Merrill, Director of Technology Services, Gilbert
Unified School District. "Novell and Apple are trusted educational partners and have
provided another key element towards seamless integration in the educational environment.
Having transparent NetWare 5 support for the Macintosh is fundamental to moving our
students and teachers into the global educational community." The school district
provides information technology services to 30 campuses with more than 28,000 students and
3,000 Apple computers.
"The Macintosh is a strategic platform for Novell and we are
anxious to allow our Macintosh customers the ability to access their NetWare 5.x servers
over an IP only network right out of the box," said Dave Shirk, senior vice president
of product management at Novell. "By providing NetWare 5 file and print connectivity
to the Macintosh, we are furthering our goal of supporting networked environments for the
enterprise and small businesses."
"By providing native IP support for Mac OS, Novell is providing
a critical service to Apples loyal enterprise customers," said Clent Richards,
vp of worldwide developer relations, Apple Computer Corporation. "Apple offers its
full support in this endeavor and looks forward to seamless Mac OS connectivity to NetWare
5.1 for Novells World Wide enterprise customers."
Prosoft to continue distribution and support of current NetWare
client for Macintosh products
Novell also announced today the conclusion of its contractual
agreement with Prosoft Engineering, which it began nearly two years ago. Prosoft
Engineering during this time has improved and released new versions of the NetWare client
for Macintosh, and will continue to distribute these versions. Customers using existing
versions of the NetWare client for Macintosh will continue to receive customer service and
support from Prosoft Engineering. As an independent developer, Prosoft Engineering will
continue to develop and sell products for the Macintosh platform.
"This is a major milestone for Mac OS connectivity," said
Greg Brewer, CEO of Prosoft Engineering. "This announcement ensures that every Mac OS
user will be able to take advantage of pure IP connectivity to the rapidly growing NetWare
5.x installed base. We at Prosoft are proud to have taken part in the development of
Macintosh clients for NetWare and we look forward to continue providing innovative
products for the Macintosh community."
Availability and Support
Pricing and availability of NetWare file and print services for
Macintosh will be announced later this year. Novell will handle support related to file
and print services for NetWare 5 while Prosoft will continue to handle all customer
support for the Macintosh client for NetWare.
