Prosoft Targets Magneto-Optical OEM Market Universal Serial Bus Drivers
Tokyo, Japan, Feb. 18, 1999Prosoft Engineering today announced that it will introduce Universal Serial Bus
(USB) software device drivers allowing magneto-optical (MO) drives to be connected with
any Mac supporting USB, giving Mac users more storage options while providing access to a
new market segment for drive manufacturers and OEMs.
Most magneto-optical drives and USB bridge controllers will
be supported by the first release of the software utility, which will ship in 30 days.
Prosoft Engineering will demonstrate its MO driver utility on Fujitsu's ATAPI
magneto-optical drive at this weeks Macworld Japan.
"Prosoft Engineering has a long history of working
with the Mac market and mass storage," said Greg Brewer, Prosofts chief
executive officer. "Our expertise makes it easy for any magneto-optical drive vendor
to reach Mac users with their product."
Magneto-optical drives are particularly popular with users
working with large graphics or image files because of the drives high storage
capacity. Since Mac systems are frequently used in design and publishing applications,
magneto-optical drives are a natural fit for the Mac market. By using USB as the
interconnect to the drives, the ease of installation and high data transfer rate enabled
by USB technology adds value to the capacity advantages provided by magneto-optical
storage.
"We have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with
Prosoft Engineering," said Vincent Fedele, president and CEO of VST Technologies, a
firm specializing in designing portable peripherals for Apple PowerBooks and other laptop
computers. "The USB interconnect provides a faster serial interface to the system
that also vastly simplifies installing new devices, and users can also plug in or unplug
our peripheral devices at any time without having to power down the computer or adjust
hardware settings."
